H3 describes three modes of engagement that a designer brings to every problem simultaneously, and a framework for assessing how developed each one is.

Hand. The making mode. Craft: the capacity to produce something with precision and intent. When you are in Hand, you are operating at the fidelity of the actual thing: pixels, interactions, copy, behaviour. Hand asks: can I make this well enough that it works for the person receiving it?
Head. The thinking mode. Systems: the capacity to understand the field you are operating in, to read the organisation around you, to navigate between what would be ideal and what the situation will allow. Head asks: do I understand this well enough to make the right call?
Heart. The feeling mode. Empathy, not as personality trait but as disciplined practice: the capacity to understand who this is for, what it means to them, and what genuinely serving them requires. Heart asks: am I making this for a real person, or for my assumption of one?

The three modes are always active. A designer working on a mobile onboarding flow is making decisions about interaction and visual form (Hand), thinking about where this flow sits in the user’s first week and what the business needs from that week (Head), and keeping in mind who this specific user is: what they understand, what they are anxious about, what they are hoping for (Heart). All three are engaged. When one lags behind the others it tends to limit the result: an effective interface built on a misread user, a sharp insight that goes nowhere. The constraint usually exists at the least-developed mode.

Most designers I encounter develop the three modes unevenly, because of how training and early exposure work. Design education primarily teaches Hand: schools have curricula for drawing, for prototyping, for production. Head develops through professional experience: reading an organisation, navigating a roadmap negotiation, building a working relationship with engineering. Donald Schön observed that professional education largely trains practitioners in “technical rationality”, systematic problem-solving in well-formed conditions, while the reflective practice needed for real, ambiguous situations accrues through experience.¹

Training mostly underserves Heart. Heart requires genuine, sustained contact with real users, the kind of contact where actual people surprise you, contradict your assumptions, and refuse to fit the archetype you had built for them. That contact is uncomfortable to arrange and difficult to do well. A well-produced persona gives the impression that Heart work was done without the actual contact Heart requires.

H3 helps you identify which mode is weakest, and what that weakness limits in the work.

If your role doesn’t give you direct user contact (common in B2B, enterprise, or agency work), two substitutes while you build toward real contact: shadow your user research team, or watch anyone using a product in real life. Even though it’s a light version of the real research, it is closer than an assumed persona document.
