Vertical 1, Craftupstream or downstream depth

Where breadth makes you legible across disciplines, craft depth makes you valuable in a specific one. It is the protection breadth alone cannot provide, and most practitioners spend years three through eight building it.

The choice that defines this vertical is upstream or downstream. The design spectrum runs from the most abstract end of the work (problem framing, research, strategy, behavioural insight) through the generalist layer (information architecture, interaction design, visual design) to the most concrete end (motion, prototyping, code, design systems). Upstream specialisation builds toward the abstract end, downstream toward the concrete, and the generalist layer in the middle is where AI compresses fastest: visual production, standard layout, and common interaction patterns are now generated rather than crafted. The ends are where craft depth still produces defensible value.

Upstream specialisation, toward research, strategy, and problem framing, is depth in the work that happens before the artefact. The upstream specialist reframes a brief accurately, designs a study that yields decision-ready findings rather than reassuring themes, translates user needs into business language convincing enough to move a roadmap, and holds a strategic argument on terms a business leader recognises. The craft is in diagnosis, framing, and translation, and the artefact is often a document or a model rather than a screen. This is the Design Strategist (Chapter 10).

Downstream specialisation, toward motion, code, systems, and production craft, is depth in the work at the artefact’s edge. The downstream specialist designs in motion rather than static frames, codes the implementation themselves, maintains the design system at the level of token architecture and component governance, and works accessibility at the level of semantic HTML and ARIA, where compliance reports never reach. The craft is in production, at a fidelity a mid-spectrum generalist cannot match. This is the Experience Engineer (Chapter 10).
