What AI CreatesAI Direction as a new senior craft dimension

AI does not only compress and amplify existing capabilities. It creates at least one new craft dimension: AI Direction, the craft of governing AI as a design collaborator. It is a dimension rather than a tool, because tools change every few quarters while the judgement required to direct them evolves more slowly.

It works through two sub-dimensions. Briefing as craft is giving AI tooling the brief a good collaborator would need: the context it cannot see for itself, the constraints that matter, the deliverable the output has to become, and what “useful” means for this decision. It now reaches past the single instruction into the standing context a tool works inside, such as reusable instructions, connected sources, and sometimes a small tool of your own, like the comment tracker the associate in 11.2 built over his Figma files. It becomes craft when the practitioner can explain why a particular brief produced the outcome it did, and adjust on that basis when the tooling changes.

Curation as craft is reading AI output and deciding which to accept, which to reject, which to use as a starting point, and which to discard because its confidence is miscalibrated to its actual quality. This is where AI Direction becomes most recognisably a design craft: the judgement discipline from Chapter 3, now applied to outputs the practitioner did not personally produce.

It deepens with seniority, because both sub-dimensions rest on craft judgement. Briefing craft needs a clear internal model of what “useful” means for a specific design decision, which comes from years of making those decisions. Curation craft needs the felt sense (3.6) that tells shallow competence from real quality. A junior can direct AI well inside an arrangement someone senior has set up, as the associate in 11.2 did. Asked to curate alone, they struggle, because the craft foundations that direction works against are still forming. The level themes in Chapter 8 trace the same growth, from augmenting craft tasks at Associate level to orchestrating AI at system level at Staff (8.1–8.4).
