The Third Branchleaving design with H3 intact

Some practitioners read the two sets of signals, one for the IC track and one for management, and recognise themselves in neither. If that is you, you have probably been carrying it quietly for a while. Neither track has to fit. Leaving design to use your H3 capabilities elsewhere is a legitimate path, and that most career ladders do not include it does not make it wrong.

Several destinations show up commonly. Product management is the most frequent: Head-primary work (strategy, roadmap, prioritisation) where the designer’s framing discipline, research literacy, and craft sensibility all transfer, often described as finding the upstream scope they always wanted without the craft-execution cost they had grown tired of. Research leadership is another, particularly for designers whose H3 profile had been Heart-weighted throughout, preserving the disciplinary depth while changing the artefact the work produces. Strategy roles (design strategy, corporate strategy, consulting) suit practitioners whose pull is toward the upstream problem-framing end, in a form that doesn’t require ongoing artefact production.

Founding is the most high-variance destination: some found companies whose products extend their design practice, others leave design behind entirely to build something unrelated, and both are legitimate uses of the H3 capabilities. Adjacent creative disciplines (writing, filmmaking, architecture, teaching) suit practitioners whose Hand has become specific enough to a different medium that the move is a continuation rather than a departure.

Head and Heart transfer cleanly across most of these moves. The systems thinking, problem framing, and translation discipline Head develops apply directly in product management, strategy, research leadership, and founding. The user understanding and cognitive empathy Heart develops apply anywhere human behaviour matters, which is most places. Practitioners who leave design and draw on these two modes generally find the move feels less like starting over than like using capabilities they had already built, for purposes that fit them better.
