I intentionally structured this book sequentially, Model before Structure before Conduct, and designed it to be returned to across a career. A section that reads as abstract at year two becomes essential at year six. The material doesn’t change, but the reader’s situation and perspective do.

The Learn-Do-Check Pattern

Sections that ask you to change a specific practice end with the Learn-Do-Check pattern.

Learn is the conceptual weight, what the section hands you to think with. It usually lives above the close, in the Learn block or the Worth knowing list, where named books, articles, and free practitioner resources anchor your deeper reading. In sections without those blocks, Learn appears as a column inside the close itself.

Do is the practical counterpart, the next concrete move that lands the section in your weekly, monthly, or quarterly practice.

Check is the self-assessment that closes the section and feeds the next cycle.

Seven H3 tools (T01–T07) appear throughout the text, specified upon first use and expanded in the Tools section at the back of the book. Each is a working instrument, intended to be run against the practitioner’s own practice.

External works are cited inline in the prose with author and year. Longer footnotes carry full publication details. Each section’s “Worth knowing” panel lists free practitioner reads that anchor the section’s argument from a different angle. References are only pointers.

How this book talks

Each chapter says what it is and what it is not: what belongs to Hand, Head, or Heart, and what sits in one of the other two modes. The point of distinguishing three distinct modes is that they are distinct enough to develop unevenly.

On voice

The book talks to you directly, one practitioner to another. It steps back to the third person where it examines the work itself: the archetypes, the levels, the pitfalls. The chapters ahead are written for the practitioner described in one of those four cases. Where a chapter assumes context you do not yet have, it will pause and say so: a short callout labelled If you haven’t hit this yet, pointing you to what to do with the section until your practice catches up. These are navigation notes for readers the chapter is still waiting on.

On returning to this book later: find the section that felt most abstract on the first read, and start there. Then re-run T01 H3 Self-Assessment Radar and compare against your earlier score. The sections that bounced off before are the ones to read slowly.
