A Practitioner Mappedthe π Profile & Career Map in practice

Andrea is eight years into her career. Staff Designer at a healthcare SaaS company, four major products shipped, and a manager who has just suggested she consider the management track. She runs T02 (the π Profile & Career Map) before that conversation. Here is her mapping, decision by decision.

Horizontal bar

She marks Fluent against five disciplines: UX research, visual and interaction design, accessibility, design systems, and product and business literacy. She pauses at Strategic for research. She can design and run studies, and distinguish decision-ready findings from themes. But directing a research programme, shaping research hiring, deciding at scale whether research is decision-ready or decorative, she hasn’t done that. Foundation on information architecture, content design, and motion. She counts: five Fluent, zero Strategic, three Foundation. The bar is full but flat. She notes the pattern.

Craft direction and depth

She reads both direction cards. The upstream card reflects her work back to her precisely: reframe the brief before designing, produce findings the PM uses to reprioritise, hold the argument on their terms. The last two years have looked like this consistently. She marks upstream. Depth is rated 1 to 5: 1 still in the middle, 2 early pull, 3 clarified, 4 compounding, 5 archetype depth. She scores 3, Clarified. She is consciously practising upstream on most projects. She resists marking 4. Depth 4 says years of focused work. Specific skills peers with similar experience cannot reproduce. She thinks of two colleagues at her level who could run the same reframing moves. Not yet. Target depth: 4 by year two.
