Level 2, the Senior designer, is where you stop being supervised and start being trusted. The title range is Senior Designer, Designer II, or Mid-level Designer, again organisation-specific. The defining verb is Assist: shipping consistently, assisting the senior designers above you on larger projects, and increasingly modelling the craft reflexes the Associates below you are still building. Assist is where the horizontal bar of the π (7.2) forms, because the Senior level is usually when a practitioner works across enough projects, product areas, and collaborators to build the breadth the framework relies on.

The primary relationship for a Senior is with a product area: a feature, a surface, a workflow, a user segment. Where the Associate owned tasks, the Senior owns outcomes at the feature scale, an onboarding flow, a settings area, a reporting experience. The Senior is accountable not just for the artefacts but for whether the feature works in use: whether users can complete the intended task, whether engineering built what was specified, whether the research finding that informed the design was actually addressed.

Scope of delivery is end-to-end on features. The Senior runs a feature from the brief’s interrogation through research and framing, through design and iteration, through the handoff to engineering and the review of what actually shipped. The horizontal bar makes that possible: a Senior who has collaborated across research, engineering, content, and accessibility can own a feature’s full shape, where a Senior with thinner breadth owns only the middle (visual and interaction) and loses the edges.
