The Experience Engineerdownstream, Hand-primary
Years ago I made the case to a CEO for building out an Experience Engineering division. His view was the common one: a designer is stronger for having product sense, and the engineering can be taught. For me it had run the other way. I built the engineering first, the habit of thinking in logic and algorithms, which was not something I could have picked up quickly on the side, and only then learned to apply it to design. The product sense came last of the three. And it was the engineering that grounded the rest. Once I understood how a design is actually realised into tangible form in code, I could see how to use that to sharpen a picture of the product instead of only hoping for one. A vision you cannot see a way to build is only a hope.
That path, building the downstream craft first, is one way into the Experience Engineer, the Staff IC whose specialisation is the downstream end of the design spectrum. Their craft happens at and past the artefact’s edge: motion calibrated to production fidelity, code-integrated interaction, design systems architecture at the token and governance level, accessibility at the implementation scale rather than the compliance scale. The mid-spectrum designer works on the static artefact and the upstream designer works on its framing. The Engineer works on its lived-in behaviour in the final medium, code, runtime, and the systems that hold both over time.
Take motion. An Engineer calibrates it at the level of felt sense (3.6): the 280-millisecond ease-out reads as the system responding, the 240-millisecond version reads as it rushing, and that gap is the craft. Token systems they architect the way the collective-craft framing (3.5) describes: tokens named for meaning, location secondary, with governance that holds the standard as the team grows. They design in code, where what matters is how an interaction behaves in the final runtime, rather than how a static frame looks. And they build accessibility in at population scale (5.6), from the first decision rather than bolted onto a shipped artefact, through semantic HTML, ARIA, and keyboard affordances.
