Direction (Heart)what great design means in practice

The second domain is Direction: the creative expression of what great design means in practice, the aesthetic, relational, and experiential quality the team produces day-to-day. Where Vision answers where the team is going, Direction answers what “great” looks like while they get there. A team can have clear Vision and drifting Direction: the strategic destination is set, but the daily work does not yet match the standard. A team can have strong Direction and absent Vision: the work is consistently excellent, but no one can say what the team is becoming. Both shapes are common, and neither is sufficient alone. Direction is Presence (6.2) at team scale, the question of being seen applied to what the whole team ships.

The H3 axis of Direction is Heart. That may read as counter-intuitive, since creative direction sounds like Hand work at scale, but the leadership move here is relational. Direction is the leader shaping the team’s collective taste, holding standards the team can internalise and eventually enforce on each other, and putting the design point of view to work across people who each bring their own craft instincts. The leader has stepped back from executing the craft personally. That was craft depth on the IC track (7.3). Heart’s user-orientation discipline, reading people accurately, holding trust, reading what serves, applies to the team itself when Direction is the domain being practised.

Direction in the day-to-day takes several forms. Running design critique so it sets a shared standard rather than imposing preference. Articulating and re-articulating what “done well” means for the work the team ships. Reviewing at the right altitude for the stage the work is in, formative or summative. Holding consistency of standard across different practitioners’ work without flattening their individual voices. And knowing which craft knowledge to teach explicitly and which to let be learned by exposure. It also includes the leader’s own continued craft presence, not to ship the work (that would be IC Lead territory) but to stay close enough to the artefact that their critique reads as informed rather than authoritative.
