Organisation (Heart)the people who make the work possible

The fourth domain is Organisation: the people who make the work possible (hiring, team composition, development, performance, mentorship) and the relational conditions under which a group of practitioners becomes a functioning team. Organisation is the most visible of the five domains, in that team members experience it directly, and the least visible in what creates it. Most of that work happens in one-to-one conversations, in hiring decisions made months before their effects appear, and in the slow building of trust that cannot be produced on demand.

The H3 axis of Organisation is Heart. People, relationships, trust, growth, the full Heart vocabulary (Chapter 5) applied at team scale. A leader strong in Heart usually finds Organisation natural. One strong in Head without strong Heart often builds Organisation that is structurally correct (right team composition, appropriate performance rituals) and relationally thin (designers who feel managed rather than supported, who deliver but do not grow). Structure without relational depth gives teams that deliver but do not invest in each other. Depth without structure gives warm teams that underperform.

A third pattern sits between these. A leader with relational depth but no mechanism for the team to act on what its designers learn leaves designers who feel supported but unheard, the soil saviour burnout (§5.1) grows in. The Heart-strong leader’s specific Organisation responsibility, set out here so it stops being only the IC’s problem, is to build the channels findings travel through: a research review with authority, a critique that translates into product decisions, a one-to-one that draws out what the designer is carrying alone.
