The Branch changes your H3 profile permanently. Both branches still use all three modes (per the simultaneous-primary commitment the book has held since the Preface). Every designer continues to use Hand, Head, and Heart throughout their career, but which modes bear the most weight, and which get the most focused development, diverges sharply between the two tracks.

The IC branch deepens Hand and Head. A practitioner who stays IC after Lead keeps building craft depth in one direction (7.3), upstream or downstream, with Head expanding to handle increasingly systemic craft decisions: patterns that scale, methods that travel, artefacts that shape how other designers work. Heart stays active and necessary, the IC designer still needs sustained user contact and still reads the emotional tone of the work, but the primary development in years three through ten of IC depth is the Hand-Head pairing.

The management branch pivots to Heart and Head. A practitioner who takes management at Lead begins the leadership-depth work (7.4): a leadership craft built on Heart (reading people, building trust, holding standards across different practitioners’ work) and Head (organisational thinking, hiring strategy, systemic judgement about teams and their conditions). Hand does not disappear, but it recedes from daily execution. The manager still ships things, just different ones: the hire, the rubric, the team structure, the critique that raised the team’s standard, all Hand-produced artefacts in a different medium.

Each track fails its own way. The IC pitfall is refusing to develop Head. A practitioner who stays IC without expanding into Head-work at Lead and beyond builds craft that is excellent in its local scope and brittle beyond it. They cannot argue their work convincingly to product or business stakeholders, shape the systems the craft runs in, or scale their standard past what they personally touch. By the time this is visible, the practitioner has usually been in the plateau for three or four years and believes the problem is external. The Head work this path needs is in Chapter 4, and the upstream specialisation (7.3) is partly how it gets addressed.
