H3 differs from every other framework in design practice on four structural points. The first distinction is that H3 begins with the practitioner rather than the idea, the process, or the project.

The person doing the work is the starting point. Ideas are singular. A designer solves this problem, then the next one. Every brief is different enough that the methodology needs to flex. What travels is the practitioner: their judgement, their craft, their capacity to read a brief, a user, or a situation, and their accumulated sense of how design decisions compound into outcomes.

Investing in idea-centric frameworks makes you better at applying those frameworks. Investing in H3 makes you a better practitioner, whichever framework you apply.

The practical consequence of this distinction is durability. Agile replaced waterfall. Lean replaced Agile. AI is now compressing steps that used to take weeks. Each shift changes the process. But still, a developed practitioner needs to be able to do the same: read the need, exercise craft, navigate the system.

The remaining three distinctions follow: career level as structure (1.7), craft as developable (1.8), and the two scales of individual and team (1.9).

Why three modes, rather than a single axis of seniority or scope? Because seniority and scope describe a designer’s position, which is a different thing from their capacity, and position does not explain what design practice actually demands. A designer with twenty years of craft can still stall, and “more skill” can’t fill what is missing from scope and implication.

Three modes are the set that separates making from navigating from leading.

For each of the last three frameworks you adopted, write one sentence describing how your practice changed as a result. If you cannot write the sentence, the framework changed your vocabulary. Your practice changes when your behaviour changes.
