A Note to the Readerwherever you are in the triangle

The framework I have been developing across these sixteen chapters is mine, in the particular sense that I am the one who has been drafting it, testing it in the organisations I have worked in, refining it through conversations with practitioners whose careers I have been lucky to watch closely.

It is not mine in the larger sense.

The triangle belongs to Pestalozzi and the two centuries of education theory before and after him. The craft vertical and leadership vertical belong to every discipline that distinguishes apprenticeship from mastery. The five management domains belong to design organisations that have been running some version of these responsibilities since design as a profession existed. What I have done is gather these into a single operating logic, hold them at one consistent scale, and try to write them in a voice that stays on the line between practitioner-specific and universalising.

This book addresses three readers at once. A junior designer reading it as a map of where the path goes. A senior practitioner reading it as a mirror held up against their own development. A design leader reading it as an instrument for the team they are trying to build. All three readers are valid. None of them is who the book is primarily for. This book is for all three, and the Preface’s simultaneous-primary commitment, an emphasis map with no gate in it, has tried to hold that through every chapter.

If you are the junior: the framework is most useful to you as the map of where your career can go. Read it without the timeline feeling like a verdict on where you currently are. The horizontal bar you are building now is the most valuable part of the early career even when the day-to-day work does not feel like it. Hand-side reflexes accumulate slowly and compound substantially; Head-side diagnosis develops through sustained practice on briefs that do not resolve cleanly; Heart-side user contact shapes the designer you will become in ways no other discipline can supply. Three years of focused work on the horizontal bar is the foundation the rest of the framework stands on.
