The fourth distinction: H3 operates at two scales simultaneously, the individual practitioner and the team they are part of or leading.

Most practitioner development frameworks address the individual. H3 was built to work at both. A design team is composed of individuals with different H3 profiles: different levels of Hand, Head, and Heart development, different combinations of strength and weakness. When team members are collectively strong in Hand but thin in Head, the team over-invests in execution and under-invests in problem framing. Well-crafted solutions ship to the wrong problems, repeatedly, until someone develops enough Head to notice, and enough standing to say so. H3 lets a leader see this when a team’s work ships fast and misses.

When a design leader is reviewing a team, building one, or diagnosing why the team keeps hitting the same friction, H3 gives them an observation-based diagnostic that works with vocabulary the team already has. It asks: where is the team’s collective Hand? Where is its Head? Where is its Heart? What does the imbalance among the three tell us about which problems are outside the team’s current reach?

Practice is social. It happens in teams, which means the designer’s development affects the team’s capability, and the team’s composition affects each designer’s development.
