The third distinction: H3 treats craft as a capacity that deepens throughout a career.

Process frameworks tend to presume craft. When Design Thinking produces a prototype direction, the assumption is that the person building it knows how to build one well. Craft is the prerequisite.

H3 makes craft the subject because the move from instinct to articulable judgement is a development no training program explicitly targets, and that depth matters more at each subsequent level.

The clearest sign is a strong portfolio its owner cannot account for. A designer can produce excellent work: clean compositions, well-considered interactions, competent prototypes. They can still have craft that is shallow. Shallow craft means the decisions look right but the reasoning behind them is weak, even to the designer who made them. They cannot explain why the spacing works, why they chose this interaction model over three alternatives, why the copy reads well. They followed instinct or precedent, and the output happened to be good. A good output by instinct is not yet craft depth.

Craft becomes deep when you can account for it: when you know why a decision is right, and so can defend it under scrutiny, adapt it under a new constraint, and transfer the reasoning to a junior designer.

H3 treats craft as developable because the move from instinct to articulable reasoning, from “this works” to “this works because, and here is what changes when the constraint changes”, is a specific development most practitioners leave to chance. It happens by accident, over time, if the conditions are right.
