π and H3 Connectionarchetypes at Vertical 1 maturity

Both archetypes are expressions of IC-track craft depth at the Staff level: a practitioner who deepens upstream becomes a Design Strategist, one who deepens downstream becomes an Experience Engineer, and they are the two most common shapes Staff-level craft takes. The π framing (Chapter 7) applies to both: each rests on a mature horizontal bar (the breadth that makes the specialisation deployable), develops craft depth in one direction, and, crucially, does not develop leadership depth at the same time. Leadership depth is the management branch’s work. These archetypes are what the IC branch produces when craft depth is followed to Staff and beyond.

The H3 mode weights, with the simultaneous-primary framing (8.1): the Strategist carries Head heaviest, Heart strong, Hand at a remove, and the Engineer carries Hand heaviest, Head strong, Heart at a remove. Both still draw on all three modes. The weighting is what sets the archetypes apart, from each other and from mid-spectrum practice, where no single mode carries distinctive weight and AI compression bites hardest.

A hybrid pattern does exist and deserves acknowledgement. Some Staff practitioners have genuine depth in both directions, the Strategist who also codes at production fidelity, the Engineer who also runs research and constructs Purpose arguments. Hybrids are rare, and the path is long and intentional: fifteen-plus years of compounding, typically beginning with one direction and adding the second late, through cross-training most practitioners never undertake. The hybrid is a different profile with different trade-offs (less depth at the extremes, more flexibility across them).
