Hiring the Strategistportfolio signals and interview approach
Hiring for the Design Strategist archetype (per Chapter 10.2) requires evidence of upstream depth: brief interrogation, research strategy, behavioural-science application, and the translation discipline that converts user insight into business-facing argument. The evidence lives in specific places, and the interview is structured to draw out the judgement that the portfolio alone cannot fully demonstrate.
The first practical filter, before any portfolio review: candidates who end up as Strategists almost always have a recognisable background-and-aspiration signature. Their recent work leans toward UX research, research synthesis, service design, or strategic consulting rather than toward visual and interaction production. When they describe the work they find energising, the language is about problem shape, user understanding, decision quality, with motion timing, component systems, and tool fluency nowhere in it. When they describe where they want to grow, the direction is upstream, toward strategy, toward business partnership, toward research leadership, pulling away from the artefact.
This background-and-aspiration filter is the first-pass signal that the candidate is pointed toward the archetype, more than merely applying to it because the title was open.
Portfolio signals beyond the first-pass filter, at the leader-hiring scale:
Case studies that argue from user truth through business consequence in the same narrative, not two separate sections but a single argument that states both halves of the Purpose sentence (6.1).
Frameworks, diagnostic artefacts, or strategic documents the team adopted, evidence that the candidate’s upstream work travelled into other designers’ practice rather than remaining in their own head.
Named examples of decisions that changed direction because of the candidate’s diagnosis, specific, dated, with the reframe legible. A candidate who can point to one such decision has demonstrated Strategist work. A candidate who cannot point to any has demonstrated Strategist interest without the practice.
