In 2006, I was living a double life. By day I was building a train control system interface, the kind of software where a wrong decision has consequences nobody wants. By night I was in a studio recording an album with my band. Both demanded full presence. Neither took kindly to being treated as a side project.

At the time I thought I was balancing two separate lives. It took years to see they were the same job in different outfits.

Drumming requires you to hold three things at once:

Precision: keeping time, hitting the right note at the right moment, being the infrastructure the rest of the band trusts.
Listening: sensing when the guitarist needs space to show off, when the vocalist is climbing, when the room needs a push and when it needs silence.
Purpose: knowing what the song is trying to do, and subordinating your own ego to it. Not because your impulse is wrong, but because the song is larger than any single part.

Keeping time is Hand. Listening is Heart. Serving the song is Head. The same three modes you will meet in the next pages. I learnt them on a drum kit first.

I was never the most technically flashy drummer in any session I played, a fact I accepted early. What I could do was groove: hold the time steady enough that the other musicians felt safe taking risks. That choice, collective service over technical display, shaped how I heard music, and eventually how I worked.

Our vocalist had a naturally raspy voice. We didn’t fight it. We wrote within it, finding the keys and tempos where that texture became the point. The constraint became the character of the sound.

A designer who can only execute a brief is like a drummer who can only keep time to a metronome: technically present, but artistically vacant. Both jobs ask you to hold precision, attention, and purpose at once.
